Austin Byers

Austin Byers is currently an Assistant Director of Bands at Cypress Woods High School in Cypress, Texas outside of Houston. At Cypress Woods, he leads the visual program for the marching band and directs and assists with their concert bands and colorguard. During his time there the marching band has been a consistent BOA Regional finalist and 6A State Marching Contest participant, and received multiple UIL Concert and Sightreading Sweepstakes. Austin is an alumni of the University of Texas at Austin where he received his Bachelor of Music in Music Studies and Certificate in Trombone Performance.

Austin has an extensive background in the performing arts including experiences with drum corps, winter guard, and a professional dance company. He began his drum corps career marching baritone with the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps for the 2016 season, and continued to perform with the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps in 2017 and 2019. From his marching experience, Austin developed a passion for movement which he continued to pursue performing with ORIGINS Open (2018 and 2020) and World (2022), an independent winter guard based out of Austin, TX. During his time at UT, he spent a season training and dancing with Chaddick Dance Theater, a professional modern dance company also based out of Austin, TX.

Aside from working at Cypress Woods, Austin also choreographs for various band and winter guard programs in the greater Houston area. During the past couple of years, he has worked on the visual staff for both Crossmen and Santa Clara Vanguard. This is Austin’s second year working with The Breakdown Camp and is extremely excited for more experiences of learning, challenging, and creating with multiple directors and student performers!
